Equine-Partnered Play Therapy: Experiential Workshop

This workshop will include experiential, hands-on interaction with our equine partners!

Throughout history, children and animals have shared a special bond. Equine-Partnered Play Therapy blends child-centered play therapy with equine assisted counseling. This approach is evidence-informed and beneficial in assisting children with variety of mental health concerns such as trauma, depression, anxiety, self-harm, and many others. Attendees will also learn about best practices ethical considerations when incorporating equines into play therapy. In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to both experience the healing power of equines while learning and practicing skills when including equines in play therapy. Both mental health professionals and equine professionals are welcome to come and learn about the power of play and equines!​

Learning Objectives

*Describe the basic tenets of child-centered play therapy (CCPT).
*Discuss the nature of equines and equine behavior as related to play therapy.
*Describe benefits of EPPT
*Observe and identify best practices in Equine-Partnered Play Therapy (EPPT).
*Describe best practices in maintaining equine welfare in EPPT
*Identify strategies to evaluate equines for participation in EPPT
*Describe effective ways to set up and maintain play area
*Discuss risk management strategies in equine assisted counseling
*Identify ethical considerations in equine assisted counseling
*Discuss precautions and contraindications when evaluating clients for participation in EPPT
*Demonstrate effective documentation procedures for EPPT
*Differentiate roles of mental health professional and equine professional
*Discuss strategies to facilitate effective mental health professional- equine professional relationship

​*Demonstrate specialized play therapy facilitation skills for EPPT

Presenters

Hallie Sheade, PhD, LPC-S, RPT-S​

Dr. Hallie Sheade holds a PhD in Counseling and is a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPC-S) and Registered Play Therapist Supervisor (RPT-S). Hallie is the cofounder and Executive Director of S.T.E.P.S. With Horses. She also holds PATH Intl. credentials as an Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning (ESMHL) and as a Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor (CTRI). Hallie developed the Relational Equine-Partnered Counseling and Equine-Partnered Play Therapy approaches for equine assisted counseling. She is the author of Equine-Assisted Counseling and Psychotherapy: Healing Through Horses. In addition, she serves on multiple committees across PATH Intl. and the Horses and Humans Research Foundation. Hallie is a faculty candidate for PATH Intl.’s ESMHL Workshop and is the Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy Technical Editor for PATH Intl.’s quarterly publication, Strides.

Laura Hamrin, PATH Intl. ESMHL/CTRI,
​CHA Certified

Laura Hamrin is the Equine Manager and Lead Equine Specialist at S.T.E.P.S. With Horses. She holds PATH Intl. credentials as an Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning (ESMHL) and as a Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor (CTRI). Laura is also CHA IRD clinic staff and CHA standard certified.

Terms and Conditions

Age Requirements All participants in equine activities must be at least 18 years of age.
Continuing Education Hours Policy To be eligible to receive continuing education hours (“CE Credit”) for this Workshop, you MUST attend and complete the entire Workshop for which you have registered, including arriving on time and staying for the entire duration. You must also complete the post-workshop evaluation in order to receive CE credit. We are unable to provide partial CE credit. There are no exceptions to this policy. Play therapy credit will not be awarded to non-mental health professionals.
Required Paperwork. Each Participant in the Workshop must execute both the STEPS and 4Hearts Ranch voluntary waiver and release forms and a photo release.
 Cancellation Policy. Participants canceling following registration and payment of Participant Fees will receive a full refund of fees paid, minus a $25.00 processing fee, if cancelled more than 2 weeks prior to the Workshop  and 50% of Participant Fees paid if cancelled less than 2 weeks prior to the Workshop. Notwithstanding the foregoing, no refunds will be made if Participant cancels within 48 hours of the Workshop. If Participant’s cancellation is related to COVID-19 exposure, symptoms, or positive test result, BestLife and S.T.E.P.S. With Horses (“STEPS”) may offer, at their discretion, a credit to Participant towards registration fees for a future STEPS/BestLife Workshop. If the Workshop is cancelled by BestLife or STEPS, for any reason, Participant will receive a full refund of any monies paid. STEPS and BestLife are not responsible for reimbursing costs associated with travel and lodging. However, we are happy to provide proof of cancellation upon request.
 Workshop Materials. Participants receiving Workshop materials, understand and agree that such materials are copyrighted work by STEPS and/or Equine Connection Counseling (“ECC”). Participants agree that they will not duplicate Workshop material for resale or otherwise reproduce Workshop material without the written permission of STEPS and ECC. Additional copies of the Workshop materials may be available for purchase upon request.
Competency to Practice Equine-Partnered Play Therapy (EPPT)

 Use of the terms "Equine-Partnered Play Therapy” and “EPPT”
The terms "Equine-Partnered Play Therapy” and “EPPT” are trademark protected and use of these terms is limited to Approved Providers recognized by Equine Connection Counseling. Contact Equine Connection Counseling to learn more about becoming an Approved Provider.
 COVID-19 Procedures. STEPS complies with all recommendations and guidelines established by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Participants must abide by the following COVID-19 procedures:
1. 
Participants may be required to wear an appropriate mask that covers Participant’s nose and mouth at all times during indoor activities (including when using the restroom). Bandanas, neck gaiters, or masks with a vent will not be accepted.
2. 
Participants may be required wear a mask during outdoor activities in which Participants cannot stay socially distanced.
3. 
All Participants who experience any COVID-19 symptoms within 14 days prior to or during the workshop agree to immediately notify BestLife to determine if they are still eligible to participate.
4. Participants who test positive for COVID-19 during or within 10 days prior to the Workshop may not participate.
5. Any Participant who tests positive for COVID-19 during or within 14 days after the Workshop agrees to immediately notify Bestlife and STEPS.
6. Participants who need to cancel due to COVID-19 may be offered an option to participate remotely in classroom instructional activities.
